Maine Lake Ice Out Information

Welcome to the latest addition to our website.  ICE OUT INFORMATION.  Beginning in 2011, we will track lake ice-out conditions throughout Maine. Will we have an early ice out in 2011 or will it be late? During the Spring of 2011 this web page will be updated daily during the week as new ice out information comes in. You are encouraged to send us a quick email when the ice goes out in your area so we can keep this page current.

So.... what exactly is ice out? This topic has often been debated. For the purposes of this web page, we will consider "ice out" to be when you can navigate unimpeded from one end of the water body to the other. There may still be ice in coves or along the shoreline but when a person can traverse the entire water body without being stopped by ice flows, we will consider the ice to be out.

Please remember to be careful out there. Cold water KILLS. An unplanned dunk in a lake with water temperatures running around 40 degrees can quickly numb your body and make climbing out impossible. Wear that PFD!
